Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how PDF Reader Pro ("the app", "we", "us", or "our") handles information when you install and use the Android application and this project website. This policy is intended to provide a public, stable privacy notice for users, store reviewers, and distribution platforms.

1. Scope

This policy applies to:

• The Android app PDF Reader Pro distributed under the package name com.pdfreader.cn.
• The project website hosted at cnnetworkoff.github.io/PdfReaderPro, including this privacy page.

2. Information We Process

2.1 Information processed on your device

To provide PDF reading and PDF tool features, the app may process content and metadata from files you choose to open or manage. Depending on how you use the app, this can include:

• PDF files and other selected source files.
• File names, file paths, folder names, file sizes, modification times, and related document metadata.
• Your reading progress, such as recently opened files and last viewed page.
• Your saved favorites, bookmarks, annotations, and interface preferences.
• Optional passwords you choose to save for password-protected PDF files.

2.2 Information we do not intentionally collect as an online service

Based on the current codebase, the app does not include advertising SDKs, mobile analytics SDKs, crash reporting SDKs, or behavioral tracking SDKs. We do not operate a user account system for the app, and we do not require you to create an account to read or manage PDFs.

3. How the App Uses Information

Information processed by the app is used to provide core functionality, including:

• Finding and displaying PDF files stored on your device or provided through Android share/open actions.
• Opening, viewing, searching, navigating, and rendering documents.
• Saving recent items, favorites, bookmarks, annotations, and reading preferences.
• Supporting PDF editing and utility features such as merge, split, compression, reordering, locking, unlocking, watermarking, page numbering, and conversion workflows available in the app.
• Optionally remembering saved passwords for encrypted PDFs when you enable or use that feature.
• Checking whether a newer app release exists, where that functionality is available in the build you use.

4. Permissions and Device Access

The Android app may request device permissions or equivalent access in order to function. Depending on Android version, device behavior, and build configuration, the app may request or use storage-related access to locate, open, create, modify, export, or organize PDF files.

• All files access / broad file access: on supported Android versions, the app may ask you to enable broad file access so it can automatically discover PDF files across device folders and perform document-management actions such as browse, rename, delete, move, and organize supported files outside app-specific storage.
• Storage and file access: used to discover PDFs on your device and to read, create, edit, export, rename, or delete files you choose to manage with the app.
• Internet access: used for limited app features such as checking for updates, opening external links, and any optional online or network resource paths supported by the app.

You can choose not to grant broad file access. If you do, some device-wide discovery and file-management features may be limited, but the app may still support opening individual documents you explicitly select through Android-provided file-picking flows where available.

5. Local Storage on Your Device

The app stores certain data locally on your device so features continue working between sessions. Local storage may include:

• Recent files and last opened page information.
• Favorites.
• Bookmarks.
• Annotations and related annotation metadata.
• App and reader preferences, such as theme, sorting, orientation, and viewing options.
• Update-check preferences, such as skipped versions and last check time.

Optional saved PDF passwords are stored locally using Android Keystore-backed encryption according to the current implementation. If you do not want passwords stored on your device, do not enable or use password-saving features, or clear them from the app if that option is provided.

6. Network Activity and Update Checks

PDF Reader Pro is designed to work mainly on-device, but some builds may make limited network requests. Based on the current codebase, those requests can include:

• Requests to GitHub's release API to check whether a newer version of the app is available.
• Opening external links you choose to visit, such as project or support pages.
• Optional online or network PDF access paths supported by the app or embedded viewer components.

If you install a Play Store build, updates may be delivered through Google Play rather than direct in-app APK installation. Store providers such as Google Play may independently collect data under their own privacy terms. That processing is controlled by the store provider, not by us.

7. Third-Party Services and Libraries

The app includes third-party open-source libraries to provide technical functionality such as PDF rendering, document processing, networking, dependency injection, image loading, open-source license display, and user interface features. These libraries are included to make the app function; they are not included for ad targeting or user profiling.

When the app contacts an external platform such as GitHub for release checks, that platform may receive technical request data such as IP address, user agent, request time, and standard HTTP metadata as part of normal internet communication. That external processing is governed by the third party's own policies.

8. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We do not rent your personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

We may disclose information only in limited circumstances, such as:

• When necessary to comply with applicable law, regulation, legal process, or enforceable government request.
• When necessary to protect rights, safety, app integrity, or to investigate fraud, abuse, or security issues.
• When data is transmitted by your own direct use of third-party destinations, such as opening a web page or contacting a store or code-hosting platform.

9. Data Retention

Data stored by the app on your device generally remains there until you delete it, clear the app's storage, uninstall the app, or remove the relevant files, bookmarks, annotations, preferences, or saved passwords through app or system controls. We do not currently operate a centralized user database for routine app usage data based on the current implementation.

10. Security

We aim to limit data handling to what is reasonably necessary for app functionality. The app stores its local state on-device, and the current implementation encrypts saved PDF passwords using Android Keystore mechanisms. However, no method of storage, software security, or internet transmission is guaranteed to be completely secure, and you use the app at your own risk.

11. Children’s Privacy

PDF Reader Pro is not directed specifically to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through a dedicated account system or analytics profile system. If you believe a child provided personal information to us directly, contact us so we can review the issue.

12. International Use

If you use the app or access this website from outside your home jurisdiction, network requests initiated by your device may be processed in other countries by infrastructure providers or third-party services such as GitHub or Google Play. Local privacy rights and protections may differ by jurisdiction.

13. Your Choices and Rights

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have rights relating to access, deletion, correction, or restriction of personal information. In practical terms for this app, you can usually control data by:

• Revoking device permissions.
• Deleting files, bookmarks, annotations, favorites, or other saved local records.
• Clearing the app's storage through Android system settings.
• Uninstalling the app.
• Avoiding optional features that store local passwords or contact third-party services.

If you contact us with a privacy request, include enough detail for us to understand the request and respond.

14. Website Information

This website is hosted using GitHub Pages. If you visit this website, GitHub may process technical access data such as IP address, browser information, request headers, and server logs under GitHub's own terms and privacy policy. We do not control GitHub's infrastructure-level processing.

15. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect app changes, legal requirements, or accuracy improvements. When we update this policy, we will revise the "Last updated" date on this page. Your continued use of the app after changes become effective means the updated policy will apply going forward.

17. Important Security Note

Access tokens, API keys, passwords, and other credentials must never be placed in this privacy policy, in any public webpage, or in source control. If a credential was pasted or exposed accidentally, it should be treated as compromised and rotated or revoked immediately through the relevant provider.
